First published by Great Smoky Mountains Association (now Smokies Life) in 1957 and still in print today, the Mountain Makin’s in the Smokies cookbook has sold tens of thousands of copies over the past 60 years. While there are nearly 20 pages devoted to cornbread and similar fare, Mountain Makin’s also includes recipes for dumplings, candy, gravy, pancakes and groundhog. There are even home remedies for whooping cough, ringworm, winter inertia and other maladies.
